3rd May 2009 - Wilverly Wanderings

A true milestone in our Forest Journeys.  When we first started the business we had hoped to get out into the Forest proper and off the roads for our tours.  Although the Verderers were sympathetic and encouraging, they suggested that they observe our progress and would consider our request again in a year or two's time.

At the beginning of our third year of operation we were invited to do a joint excursion with Burley Villas Equestrian Centre in Bashley.  A large family group wanted to ride into the forest but they were too large for either of us to accomodate on our own.  So Sunday duly arrived and 40 members of one family from a babe in arms a few weeks old to the Grandaddy's in their 70's assembled to continue a long held family tradition.

It started when the children were young and used to camp out in Dad/Grandad's garden and have a country weekend, all dressed in cowboy gear, barbeques and country music.  The tradition has continued through children and on to the grandchildren now.  Last year they all took it a step further, Grandad paid for a riding lesson at Burley Villas and this year even further, they rode out to the Wilverley Inclosure.  Half the party riding the horses and half with us.  This meant those not able to ride were still able to join in, although one of the daughters decided that as she was due to have a baby on Tuesday, it might be wise to go by car!

A fabulous day was had by all despite doubtful and chilly weather and some serious hills which really showed the power of Obie and Roop .  We hope it will be the first of many opportunities we have to allow people escorted access to the wilder parts of the Forest.
